Why the setting matters

Leading for access and excellence at an urban R1.

The University of Texas at Arlington is a large, diverse research university in one of the nation’s most dynamic metropolitan regions. Biology serves students across the university, including many first-generation students and students balancing significant financial, work, and family responsibilities.

That context shapes my leadership. Academic rigor and broad access are not competing goals. The work is to design curricula, teaching systems, and student pathways that make excellence attainable at scale.

Transforming selected core courses

Redesigned selected non-majors core courses for online, accelerated delivery, expanding access while freeing teaching-lab capacity and reducing projected instructional costs by approximately $200,000 in one academic year.

Led an evidence-informed gateway-course redesign that produced stronger and more consistent student success across sections and instructors.

Creating flexible paths to a graduate degree

Helped establish the College of Science's first fully online master's program; average time to completion has fallen to approximately 1.7 years.
